Donald Trump has vowed to implement more tax cuts ahead of the US midterms, this time promising supporters that Republicans were working on a "very major tax cut" for middle-income Americans.

However, the chances of Trump's planned cuts, promised over the weekend at a rally in Nevada, progressing through the House before the midterms, let alone the Senate, were nil, given that Congress remained in recess ahead of the elections.

White House Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin claimed over the weekend that he had been diligently working away with chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Kevin Brady, to put together the party's new tax plan.

"This is specifically focused on the middle class and not beyond that," said Mnuchin.

Mnuchin said the White House would focus on developing a middle-class tax plan. However, he refused to provide any details about which tax brackets might see their rates lowered or to say anything about whether or not the package would include larger deductions.

The secretary also failed to explain how the plan would be financed or indeed if it would be, as it might just be added be to the US's ballooning deficit.

Last year's $1.5trn tax cuts were already expected to add $1.0trn to the nation's deficit.
