US President Donald Trump has claimed Democrats are behind a series of sexual harassment claims made against him this week.

Three women who had previously alleged that Trump engaged in sexual misconduct with them shared their stories on broadcaster NBC on Monday, but the President refuted their claims and accused the opposition party of plotting against him.

Trump lashed out at the women and the Democrats in a tweet on Tuesday, and branded NBC with his familiar moniker of 'fake news'.

"Despite thousands of hours wasted and many millions of dollars spent, the Democrats have been unable to show any collusion with Russia - so now they are moving on to the false accusations and fabricated stories of women who I don’t know and/or have never met. FAKE NEWS!" Trump tweeted.

A series of accusations of inappropriate behaviour were directed towards Trump during the 2016 presidential election campaign, in which he unexpectedly defeated Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

Trump also attacked Democratic senator Kristen Gillibrand after she urged Congress to investigate Trump’s behaviour.

He said the New York senator came "to my office begging for campaign contributions not so long ago," referring to her as a "lightweight".
