North Korea experienced severe internet blackouts over the weekend that continued on Monday. One computer expert told the Associated Press that access to the web is “totally down” nationwide.

Speculative reports have begun to query whether the US could be behind the black-outs after President Barack Obama publicly announced there would be a US response to North Korea’s act of cyber vandalism.

The country hacked Sony Pictures Entertainment and threatened further action to prevent the widespread release of a film titled The Interview, which featured a satirical scene depicting the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

America has yet to release an official statement confirming or denying that this latest development has anything to do with a new ‘cyber war’.

However, state department spokeswoman Marie Harf told the Associated Press: “We aren't going to discuss, you know, publicly operational details about the possible response options or comment on those kind of reports in anyway except to say that as we implement our responses, some will be seen, some may not be seen.”
