European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said he felt “betrayed” by the “egotism” showed by Greece's negotiators, after the country failed to reach an agreement with its international creditors to unlock further aid.

Juncker commented that the Greek proposals were “deliberately altered” and that the Greek people “should be told the truth”.

The statements came the same day it was announced that Greek banks would remained closed for a week and that restrictive measures on withdrawals will be applied.

Juncker emphasised that the talks were “unilaterally” broken by the announcement made by the Greek PM Alexis Tsipras that he was calling for a referendum on 5 July on bailout terms.
