Italy's economy minister said on Tuesday Rome's 2019 budget law would reassure investors worried about the sustainability of the government's debt pile.

According to ANSA, and in remarks to retailers association, Confcommercio, Giovanni Tria said: "It will be a budget of growth, not of austerity, but also one that does not create doubts about the sustainability of our debt.

"We have to give a sign to the financial markets, to those who lend us money."

Tria also emphasised the need for prudence, highlighting how if the country asked for too much financing it risked seeing the funds squandered by higher interest payments.

The budget would prioritise a reduction in the corporate rate of tax, he also said, with the problem of personal income taxes to be addressed in coming years.
