Huawei employee arrested in Poland on spying charges

A Huawei employee was arrested on Tuesday by Polish counterintelligence agents over alleged spying activities, according to Poland’s TVP.

“The evidence gathered by the National Security Agency shows that he carried out an espionage activity against Poland,” the spokesman from the agency said in a statement.

“As part of the ongoing investigation, the officers of the Agency have taken the following necessary investigative steps: searches in the suspects’ places of residence and evidence preservation.”

Aside from the arrest of the Huawei employee called Weijing Wang, documents were also seized by the Internal Security Agency.

“Huawei is aware of the situation, and we are looking into it,” a company spokesperson said. “We have no comment for the time being. Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations in the countries where it operates, and we require every employee to abide by the laws and regulations in the countries where they are based.”

The news comes soon after the arrest of CFO Meng Wanzhou in Canada over similar charges.

Meng was detained in Canada on 1 December of last year and was accused of violating US sanctions. She was released on bail but must remain in Vancouver and wear an ankle monitor.

Huawei has also been blocked recently from participating in the 5G networks of Australia and New Zealand over further concerns of espionage.
