President-elect Donald Trump´s team was looking at Texas Republican Representative Jeb Hensarling as a potential candidate to take over at the helm of the US Treasury, the Wall Street Journal reported citing people familiar with the matter.

Hensarling was the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee and had served on that same panel for more than a decade.

One of his top known priorities was rolling back the 2010 Dodd-Frank law, the centre-piece of the Democratic party´s financial sector regulations meant to avoid lenders taking on excessive risks and thus, its proponents believed, avoid a repeat of the Great Financial Crisis.

Alternatively, Hensarling was also said to be in the running for defence secretary or attorney general.

Among other potential candidates to the top cabinet posts, naming ex-New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani as attorney general or the next Secretary of State was also discussed.

Dan DiMicco, a former steel industry C-suite executive - and a critic of US trade policies - might also be assigned a top position, the Journal said.
