Germany may downgrade existing travel restrictions to European Union member countries and other associated ones as soon as the current week.

Speaking at a press conference next to his opposite number from Ukraine, the country's foreign minister, Heiko Maas, said Berlin was preparing such a resolution which would be debated by the Cabinet on the next day, Reuters reported.

"We are preparing a resolution for the cabinet tomorrow, which is still being agreed within the government," he reportedly said.

"This week we want to start by turning the travel warning we have for the European Union and the associated countries into travel guidelines."
