German May industrial production rises less than expected

German industrial production rose less than expected in May as supply chains constraints worsened due to the war in Ukraine and Covid lockdowns in China, according to official data released on Thursday.

Total industrial output, made up of production in manufacturing, energy and construction, increased 0.2% in May compared with April, the national statistics office Destatis said.

Economists had been looking for a rise of 0.3%. April industrial production was revised upwards to 1.3% from a previous 0.7%.

Manufacturing production rose 0.6% on month in May and construction output rose 0.4%, while energy production declined 5.8%.

On an annual basis, industrial output declined 1.5% in May.
