European car sales rose at the fastest pace in five and a half years in June, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) revealed on Thursday.

Registrations rose 15% to 1.41m units from 1.23m a year earlier, with a 22% increase in Spain, 15.2% in Italy, 7% in the UK, 6.1% in France and 5.2% in Germany in comparison to the previous year.

The growth was driven by demand achieved by car manufacturers Volkswagen, Peugeot-Citroën and Ford for new models as well as an expansion of the Eurozone's economy and a seven-year low record of the UK's unemployment rate.

The ACEA raised its 2015 regional car-market expansion forecast a week ago to 5% from 2%.

In the first semester of 2015, new passenger car registrations increased 8.2% surpassing 7m units.
