An Egyptian court handed down a death sentence for former president Mohammed Morsi on Tuesday for escaping from the Wadi Natrun prison during the 2011 revolution that overthrew his predecessor, Hosni Mubarak.

The verdict confirmed an initial decision on May, that was later referred to the Gran Mufti, the country's religious authority, but can still be challenged in the country's appeals court.

In a separate ruling, the judge sentenced Morsi to life imprisonment on charges of espionage, which in Egypt’s legal system entail 25 years imprisonment.

Morsi was found guilty of conspiring with foreign militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah including “spreading chaos and seeking to bring down the Egyptian state,” judge Shaban El-Shamy said.

Morsi was tried separately on the charge of inciting his supporters to use violence against opposition demonstrators outside his palace in 2012, and faces further possible indictments for fraud and insulting the judiciary.
