At least 30 Britons were killed in Tunisia after a man with links to the Islamic State (IS) group on Friday opened fire on a hotel near Sousse, claiming 38 victims.

Three Irish were also among the dead.

Home Secretary Theresa May emphasised officials were facing difficulties in trying to identify the British victims because many of them were not carrying identification when the attack occurred.

Buckingham Palace released a statement from the Queen saying: "We send our sincere condolences to the families of those who were killed and our deepest sympathy to the people who are still fighting for their lives in hospital, and those who have been seriously injured.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those of all countries who have been affected by this terrible event."

Writing exclusively for The Telegraph, UK Prime Minister David Cameron said the country was “united in shock and in grief”.

“We must be stronger at standing up for our values – of peace, democracy, tolerance, freedom,” he wrote.

"... This is not a justification, it's just to remind that this can happen everywhere," the Tunisian ambassador to the UK Nabil Ammar told the BBC's Radio 4 on Monday.

Holidays firms have scheduled extra flights for Britons wanting to return home after the attack. UK's Thomas Cook's managing director Salman Sayed said the company had made the necessary arrangements for 1,100 guests that had asked to return to the UK over the last 72 hours.

Scotland Yard said its investigation into the attack was "likely to be one of the largest counter-terrorism deployments" since the bombing that took place in London on 7 July 2005.

Foreign Office updated its travel advisory to warn that further terrorist attacks in Tunisia were possible, and urged people to be vigilant.
