Tesla has raised the recommended retail price on its vehicles in China in response to Beijing's retaliatory tariffs on US automobiles.

The electric vehicle manufacturer's move comes after Harley-Davidson said the new tariffs on automobile imports to Europe might force it to shift motorcycle production abroad as knock-on effects arise from the escalating trade war started by the President Trump.

Beijing imposed duties on US imports shortly after the White House's own tariff package got underway on Friday.

Tesla's website now shows the price of its Model S sedan and its Model X SUV roughly 20% higher than it had before, with the lowest-priced configuration of the Model S being hiked to about 840,000 yuan from its previous 710,000 yuan RRP.

China made up about 15% of Tesla's global electric car sales in 2017, a total of 103,000 vehicles.
