Budget airline Ryanair announced on Wednesday that it would open six new routes from London Stansted Airport.

The routes will connect the Essex-based airport with Clermont and Deauville in France, the German city of Cologne and Ponta Delgada in Portugal.

The Ireland-based carrier added it would increase its services to Edinburgh and Glasgow from Stansted from three to four times a day this winter, meaning it will have as many daily flights to the two Scottish cities as it has to Barcelona, Rome, Madrid and Milan.

The group’s chief executive Michael O’Leary said the decision to increase the routes was in response to “phenomenal demand from UK customers, visitors and business travellers”.

Ryanair said the new routes and the increased frequencies are expected to deliver over 17m customers over the next 12 months and support over 17,000 “on-site” jobs at Stansted Airport.

Ryanair shares were up 0.20% to €10.00 at 16:15 on Wednesday.
