Porsche will create more than 1400 new jobs in its development of an electric sports car, the German manufacturer announced on Tuesday.

The car will aim to challenge the electric model produced by Tesla, with over 15000 vehicles to be produced per year.

The race to develop electric cars has heated up significantly during the last year, with automakers such as BMW and Volvo also revealing plans to invest in the technology.

900 positions will be created in production for the Porsche version, as well as 300 in development and 200 in administration as it looks to challenge those already competing in the market.

Andreas Haffner, personnel chief at Porsche, said the initiative would be known as "J1", and during the briefing he was keen to express how competitive the market will become.

“One can in fact describe what is going on now as a ‘war for talent,’” Haffner said.

Porsche is spending about 1bn euros in order to introduce its first battery-powered sports car in 2019, a building block of Volkswagen’s broader push to repair its image from the emissions-cheating crisis by offering more low- and zero-emission vehicles.
