Apple has announced the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will be available to purchase in China from 17 October.

The tech giant had to obtain a licence to use the devices on Chinese wireless networks.

Chief executive Tim Cook said: “We are thrilled to bring iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus to our customers in China on all three carriers at launch.”

The hotly anticipated devices will have access to 4G/LTE networks from China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom across the mainland.

Reuters reported that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) conducted “rigorous security testing” on the iPhone 6 and approval was given to Apple after it discussed potential data security risks with MIIT.

A record-breaking 10m units of the iPhone 6 model were sold during the product’s first weekend post-launch, which excluded China.
