Ford to launch driver-assist system to compete with Tesla and GM

Ford is set to launch a new driver-assist system in answer to Tesla’s Autopilot and General Motors’ Super Cruise is called “Active Drive Assist.”

The new Ford system will be able to control a vehicle’s speed, braking and steering through a system of cameras, radar and other sensors on 100,000 miles of pre-mapped divided highways in the US and Canada.

The system’s design and function are more like GM’s Super Cruise than Tesla’s Autopilot. Both systems will only operate on pre-mapped roads.

The main difference between the Active Driver Assist and GM’s Super Cruise, according to Ford officials, will be the way the system handles and interacts with drivers.

One of the models equipped with the system will be the all-electric Mustang Mach-E and it will be rolled out during the third quarter of 2021, the company announced on Thursday.

The company’s new “Active Drive Assist” will be part of the automaker’s “Co-Pilot360″ safety and convenience technologies.
