EU to charge Apple with anti-competitive behaviour over in-app payment system

European antitrust regulators will on Friday charge iPhone maker Apple with anti-competitive behaviour over its in-app payment system rules.

According to Brussels, the system does not allow developers to inform users of other purchasing options outside of apps, a person familiar with the matter said.

European antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager is expected to announce a charge sheet for Apple on Friday morning.

Apple's rules regarding its in-app payment system, which charges a 30% commission, was the focus of music streaming service Spotify's complaint to the European Commission.

Apple reacted already in 2020 by halving the fees it charges to most developers who sell software and services on the App store. It also lowered the fee for developers who generate as much as $1m in yearly revenue from their apps, as well as for those who are new to the store, to 15% from 30%.
