Shamima Begum, Amira Abase and Kadiza Sultana, the three students from London’s Bethnal Green Academy that travelled to Syria in February, are believed to have recently contacted their families more than three months after leaving.

It has also been confirmed that the three girls crossed into areas of Syria under the Islamic State's (IS) control.

ITV news reported that one of the girls called her relatives in the UK and told them she was healthy, safe and well but insisted that none of them intended to return to the UK soon. The other two girls are believed to have contacted their families over the Internet.

In an exclusive interview with Sky News, a senior female commander from IS that was in charge of the girls in Syria said she had no doubt the three London girls were groomed by a team of social media experts in Raqqa.

"I am sure they were very happy to come to Syria"

“I am sure they were very happy to come to Syria,” she said. “I think it is very interesting to them”.

She also pointed out that the girls were being trained at the moment, and said she believed they were not going back home.

“I think they will die in Syria or Iraq”, she said.
