Week ahead: US data in focus
The coming week will see a raft of macroeconomic data published Stateside, with perhaps the second reading on first quarter gross domestic product standing out the most. The most recent tracking estimates from economists indicate the US economy may have contracted at an annualised pace of about -1.1% in the first three months of the year – although it is thought that growth is being underestimated due to statistical factors.
Tuesday´s data on US durable goods orders will also be closely watched following recent weakness in America´s industrial sector.
The economic agenda in Europe looks set to be on the light side, although the upcoming regional elections in Spain wil be worth watching. Nonetheless, the biggest risk events to keep an eye on will be the latest German retail sales figures due out on Friday, alongside readings on Eurozone consumer and industrial confidence on Thursday, courtesy of the European Comission.
In the UK, all eyes will be on the Queen´s Speech on 27 May. In the following session, data on GDP, mortgage lending and consumer confidence will all be forthcoming.
