Week ahead: US and Chinese data in focus

The focus over the coming week will revert to the hard eocnomic data in most jurisdictions, including out of China and the US, although the Wuhan coronavirus will likely not be far from traders' minds.

Indeed, the pace of new virus cases over the weekend bears watching and may set the tone for the remainder of the week.

Against that backdrop, Monday will bring with it readings on consumer and factory gate prices in the People's Republic of China for January, followed by a raft of activity indicators on Friday.

Friday will also be the most intense day in the US, with reports for monthly retail, industrial production, import prices and a preliminary reading on consumer confidence all set for release.

US consumer price data for January also lay ahead, on Thursday.

On home turf, a preliminary reading on fourth quarter UK gross domestic product is due out on Tuesday, alongside readings on foreign trade and for industrial production both covering the month of December.

To take note of, investors may increasingly opt to reduce risk as the week progresses ahead of the 17 February Martin Luther King Jr. memorial day.
