Week ahead: US and China data, BoJ in the spotlight
Investors' focus over the coming week will continue to be on the US, where several key economic reports will be reported throughout the week and a multitude of Federal Reserve officials are scheduled to take to the podium.
Among the first-tier economic reports due out in the States are monthly producer price and retail sales data, both on Wednesday.
But the US will have to share the market spotlight with Asia.
On Wednesday, rate-setters at the Bank of Japan will decide on monetary policy with investors around the world likely to be carefully parsing the details of the meeting for any sign of further changes to its policy of yield curve control which might reverberate around the globe.
And the day before, China's National Bureau of Statistics will publish a barrage of activity indicators for the month of December.
Also on Tuesday, across the Channel the prestigious ZEW Institute will publish the results of its closely followed economic confidence survey for Germany.
A raft of economic reports are also due out in the UK, including reports for employment on Tuesday, consumer prices on Wednesday and retail sales on Friday.
US markets will remain closed on Monday 16 January in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
