Week ahead: US and China CPI, Fed's Powell in the spotlight
All eyes over the coming week were expected to be on US consumer price data for December, as investors tried to anticipate whether inflation was in fact headed "sustainably" - to use the Federal Reserve's own wording - down to the Fed's 2.0% target.
Ahead of that key report, on Tuesday Fed chief, Jerome Powell, would participate on two panels alongside his peers at the Riksbank.
A preliminary reading on the University of Michigan's consumer confidence index for January might be expected to closely watched.
The coming week would also see a barrage of first tier economic indicators published in the People's Republic of China.
They included readings for consumer and factory gate price data in December, on Thursday, and for Chinese foreign trade covering that same month on the following day.
Financial markets would likely also be keeping tabs on the news-flow regarding the opening of China's economy and the pandemic situation in the world's second-largest economy.
Also due out, by 15 January at the latest, were the latest monthly Chinese credit and money supply growth numbers.
Core CPI data for Tokyo in December might also move financial markets, specially in the foreign exchange space.
Those inflation numbers would be released overnight on Friday.
On home shores the only economic report of any import scheduled for release was that for November gross domestic product growth.
Across the Channel meanwhile, Tuesday would bring with it industrial production data for Germany in November.
