Director dealings: Polypipe chairman splashes out as shares drip lower

Polypipe chairman Ron Marsh has splashed out £209,138 a month after a the plastic pipe maker's record first-half results failed to inject much sustained momentum in the shares.

Marsh, long-time director of packaging group RPC who joined the Polypipe board in 2014, bought 75,000 shares at a price of 278.85p.

Shares in the FTSE 250 group have leaked lower after gushing above 300p at the start of September on the back of mid-August results that highlighted a strong performance in the UK despite uncertainty over the impact from the EU referendum.

While there is uncertainty over the UK's economic and construction sector outlook, the UK government continues to talk up the requirements to significantly increase levels of housebuilding.

Within the results, the company noted that residential demand in the first half was driven by the larger national housebuilders and improvements in the market for private repairs, maintenance and improvement, while in the infrastructure segment, demand has been driven by the Highways Agency’s road investment strategy and an ongoing focus on water management and flood prevention.

Analysts at Berenberg said at the time: "We believe the keys to the ongoing strength in Polypipe’s UK business are the
structural drivers in the business – namely the substitution of metal and ceramics for plastic in piping and drivers like sustainable drainage and carbon efficiency regulation. As a result, we remain confident the UK business can continue to outperform the broader UK construction market."
