Director dealings: Tesco directors buy into discounted prices

Several of Tesco's top directors bought into the company's shares over the back half of the week, including its boss Dave Lewis and the grocer's finance chief, Alan Stewart.

Both Lewis and Stewart picked-up 50,000 shares at 213.7p apiece for a total disbursement of £106,850 each one on 5 October.

They were preceded the day before by non-executive directors Mikael Olsson and Alison Platt, who bought 10,000 shares at 215.4p and 16,286 shares at 214.5p, respectively.

But the first two buy in was chairman John Allan, who purchased 12,000 shares at 221.7p on 3 October, followed by another 10,000 at 211.7p on 4 October, for a combined transaction value of £47,774.

On 3 October, Tesco reported a 42% increase in first-half profits and boosted its dividend as sales accelerated in the second quarter thanks to the £4bn acquisition of Booker.

That was on the back of a 12.8% jump in total sales to £28.3bn with like-for-like sales upby 2.2%.

However, operating profits of £933m on an EBIT basis had fallen 4.6% short of the consensus estimate, triggering a sharp fall in the share price, dragging the company's stock well below its 200-day moving average and a smidgen below their 200-week moving average.
