Tuesday preview: Greek talks and M&S in focus

Trading updates from Marks & Spencer, McBride and Robert Walters will be released on Tuesday morning, though are not likely to be at the forefront of investors' minds as they continue to gamble on how the ongoing Greek debt saga may play out.

Following an overwhelming 'no' vote in Sunday's referendum over bailout proposals put forward by creditors, the Greek public showed the government its support as Athens goes back to the negotiating table.

"Greece seems bound to dominate the news flow for the foreseeable future," said analysts at Daiwa Capital Markets.

An emergency Eurogroup meeting is set to start at 13:00 CET on Tuesday, ahead of the leaders' summit scheduled from 18:00 CET.

As for company news, M&S will likely grab some headlines amid speculation that the high street retailer has recently suffered struggles in the turnaround of its clothing business.

Cool weather in May and June is thought to have dampened customer purchases with like-for-like general merchandise sales expected to have fallen by around 1% over the first quarter.

The decline, if confirmed, will come as a setback to the company which had just six weeks ago hailed a return to LFL growth in the GM division in the fourth quarter ended 28 May.

Nevertheless, analysts expect LFL food sales to have risen by 0.3% over the first quarter.
