Tuesday preview: Fedspeak, Levi Strauss in focus

The spotlight on Tuesday will be on a trio of speeches from three top US central bank officials.

Federal Reserve bank of Chicago boss, Charles Evans, is set to speak at a Rotary club luncheon in Illinois at 18:35 BST, followed by Fed chairman Jerome Powell a quarter of an hour later and Minneapolis Fed chief, Neel Kashkari, after the market close in New York.

Also due out are US wholesale price data and the National Federation of Independent Businesses' small business optimism index, both covering the month of September.

In the background meanwhile, investors will be closely monitoring the headlines around the ongoing deputy level talks between US and Chinese trade officials in Washington DC.

Back on the home turf, Parliament is set to be prorogued again ahead of the Queen's speech on 14 October.

There is little in terms of fresh data scheduled, with only the Recruitment and Employment Confederation's Permanent Staff Placements and Staff Salaries indices for September due out overnight.

Across the Channel, European Central Bank chief economist, Philip Lane, will deliver a speech at an ECB conference on monetary policy, in Frankfurt, at 1030 BST.

Also set to be published are industrial production figures for September in Germany and Spain.

Levi Strauss will be in the spotlight on the corporate front.

With the iconic fashion giant's shares trading just above the price of their initial public offering earlier in the year, analysts are keen to see if the company will stick to its full-year guidance, and in particular whether strength in the US and Asia persists.

Consensus anticipates third quarter adjusted earnings per share of 28 cents.
