Investors are likely to focus on the Bank of England's Mark Carney on Tuesday.

The Governor and fellow MPC members, Ben Broadbent, Silvana Tenreyro and Michael Saunders are due to testify at 0930 BST before the Treasury Select Committee on the May Inflation Report.

Later in the day, at 1100 BST, the Confederation of British Industry will publish the results of its Industrial Trends survey covering that same month.

Stateside, figures on existing home sales in April are due for release at 1500 BST, together with speeches from Chicago Fed chief, Charles Evans, at 1600 BST, and the Boston Fed's Rosengren one hour afterwards.

Across the Channel, the European Commission will publish a preliminary reading on euro area consumer confidence in May at 1500 BST.

Among the companies set to update shareholders is Severn Trent.

Analyst James Brand at Deutsche Bank has penciled-in a 6% jump in full-year earnings before interest and taxes to reach £572m, helped by higher prices at the core water business, property sales and lower financing costs on the back of a decline in the indexation of inflation linked debt.

Profits before tax meanwhile are seen 17% ahead to £376m, adjusted earnings per share up by 16% at 140.5p and the company's dividend payout rising 8%.

Net debt, based on Severn's own definition, was also seen higher, reaching £5,772m.
