A European Parliament committee proposed that UK citizens be granted visa-free travel to Europe after Brexit.

The committee’s decision, which was adopted unanimously, still has to be approved by the full parliament next month.

The visa exemptions will cover short trips of up to three months designed for business and tourism, it does not cover the right to work in the EU.

The issue has raised some concerns regarding the British territory of Gibraltar, especially as some EU states are worried the UK will not treat EU travellers in the same way given immigration was major focus for the Leave campaign during the 2016 referendum campaign.

There was also the growing possibility that a no-deal Brexit would remain as the only option on the table for the government if the UK still goes ahead with leaving the bloc on 29 March.
