Fuel cell and electric hybrid systems Proton Motor Power Systems has received a further order from shipbuilding company Fincantieri, it announced on Monday, to deliver a fuel cell system with 144 kW of fuel cell power.

The AIM-traded firm said it would be installed at Fincantieri's first 25 metre-long demonstrator and testing vessel, ‘Zeus’, which would be exclusively powered by Proton Motor's fuel cell system.

It noted that the new order followed the first order in December.

Proton said it had been selected through Fincantieri's test and validation processes against other fuel cell system providers, which were also evaluated.

“This is excellent news, with Proton having been the world's first fuel cell system provider that has powered a ferry in Hamburg for six years between 2009 and 2014 with a 50 kW fuel cell system, it is a great achievement to receive a follow up order from Fincantieri at the ship building stage,” said chief executive officer Faiz Nahab.

At 1222 BST, shares in Proton Motor Power Systems were down 0.49% at 51.25p.
