Communication solutions group MTI Wireless Edge has secured a framework order totalling roughly $500,000 for a 5G dual-band backhaul solution.

MTI Wireless said on Monday that its antenna division had inked the deal with an undisclosed customer and expected supply of the order to be completed within the next nine months.

Dov Feiner, general manager of MTI's antenna division, said: "We see this order as a significant step towards the full deployment of 5G backhaul solutions.

"So far, we have sold thousands of antennas for 5G backhaul but all in smaller quantities and mainly for field testing and early deployments. Whereas this single larger order to be shipped over a relatively short time period is different and indicative of the market moving forward with the adoption of 5G backhaul solutions."

MTI added that with the likes of Apple and Samsung expected to launch 5G handsets in 2020, the group had been presented "a major opportunity" as operators would then need to increase backhaul connectivity between cell towers in order to deliver faster services.

As of 0910 BST, MTI Wireless shares were up 8.39% at 47.69p.
