Pharmaceutical and services company Clinigen has appointed Sam Herbert to the newly created role of chief operating officer, effective immediately.

Clinigen said on Monday that Herbert, who joins the group from specialty logistics and distribution services firm World Courier, was an experienced international healthcare pharmaceutical executive, with a background in driving growth and change in global supply and distribution businesses.

The AIM-listed group added that its new COO brings a track record of "leading businesses through commercial and service expansion" which will support its growth plans.

Chief executive Shaun Chilton said: "We have been building out Clinigen's global platform in order to fully realise our vision of being the trusted global leader in access to medicines. Now, more than ever, Clinigen has an important role to play in getting essential medicines across the world to the patients that need them.

"In adding the chief operating officer role and with it, someone of Sam's calibre and experience into the management team, this gives us more bandwidth and will significantly help us focus on executing our growth strategy and the significant number of opportunities the platform is creating."

As of 1000 GMT, Clinigen shares were up 3.56% at 699.03p.
