AIM-listed 21st Century Technology has been awarded an on-vehicle safety systems engineering contract with a "major" UK bus fleet operator worth just over £1m.

The specialist provider of tailored solutions to the transport community said the contract was awarded following a competitive tendering process involving many industry specialists through which it had to demonstrate its abilities to deliver not only on cost and quality, but also "deep technical knowledge to complete what is an intricate rollout programme".

The contract, due to complete next year, is for installation and commissioning of the electronic safety system across the operators' remaining fleet of over 5,000 buses and is a continuation of a 'safety-first' approach to public transport.

Chief executive officer Russ Singleton said: "We are delighted that this major UK fleet operator customer has selected us to carry out this important safety systems enhancement work. This contract is a further example of 21st Century delivering on our commitment to broadening the range of services we can offer to the public transport sector."

At 0840 BST, the shares were down 12.7% to 2.62p.
