LONDON (SHARECAST) - Fuel cell technologies firm ITM Power has signed a memorandum of understanding with ABRO, a trading fund of the Ministry of Defence, to develop equipment which improves the capability of diesel engines.

ITM and ABRO, which maintains vehicles and equipment owned by the British Armed Forces and emergency services, will use ITM’s technology to improve fuel efficiency and pollution control of the engines.

“The combination of ITM's unique low cost electrolyser systems to supply hydrogen for use in diesel engines and ABRO's unrivalled experience and facilities in the engineering and maintenance of vehicles…could provide an early route to the acceptance and application of this technology in both the military and civilian arenas,” said the group.

In a separate announcement, ITM said the University of Hertfordshire has conducted tests to see if an admixture of hydrogen to diesel fuel can significantly improve the operation of the diesel engine, reducing both fuel consumption and emissions.

As a result of initial tests, the University has reported significant improvements in the steady speed power output of a diesel engine when supplied with hydrogen. Significant improvements to the emissions output are also expected.

An extended series of trials involving a range of different engines and operational conditions will be necessary to define the full potential of the technology, which could take over six months to complete.
