US midday: Dow remain up, but Nasdaq declines |

LONDON (SHARECAST) - US shares have lost some of their early gains and Nasdaq has gone into negative territory. European markets have also lost much of their earlier gains.
The Dow is now 42 points higher at 10,448, while the S&P 500 is 1 higher at 1,103. Nasdaq is 7 lower at 2,184.
November retail sales climbed 1.3% during the month, after rising 1.4% in October. Stripping out cars, sales climbed 1.2%. Both figures were more than twice what economists were anticipating.
The University of Michigan preliminary index of consumer sentiment rose to 73.4 in December, higher than forecast, from 67.4 in November. This improved sentiment could help the recovery in 2010.
News of a sharp rise in Chinese industrial production in November to its fastest rate this year boosted the mining sector. Industrial output surged 19.1% from the year-ago period.
Aluminium producer Alcoa was the biggest riser on the Dow. JP Morgan Chase has increased its target price from $22 to $25.
Procter & Gamble has agreed to buy Sara Lee's Ambi Pur air-freshener business for $470m. The agreement also includes the acquisition of several toilet-care products, P&G said.
Yahoo! rose as Kaufman Bros upped its rating on the stock to buy from hold, citing evidence that Yahoo! is gaining more traffic from its search ads and demand for and prices of its display ads has picked up in the fourth quarter.
IMS Health was the biggest faller on the S&P. The provider of prescription data to drug makers is concerned that politicians are trying to ban the sale of prescribing records for marketing purposes.
