LONDON (SHARECAST) - The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of drug giant AstraZeneca’s bipolar disorder treatment Seroquel in conjunction with antidepressants to treat major depressive disorder (MDD).
Astra said that many sufferers of MDD, of whom there are 14.2m in the US, do not respond adequately to treatment of antidepressants. Seroquel can provide doctors with a means to deal with this, Astra said.
The company said the FDA has also written to Astra asking for additional data on the use of Seroquel by itself for treatment of MDD.
News of Seroquel's approval comes the day after Astra announced it is to licence TC-5214, also used to treat MDD, developed by biopharmaceutical company Targacept.
