US close: Dow ends sharply lower |

LONDON (SHARECAST) - US shares had a turbulent half day as they fell sharply prior to the 1pm close. Investors returned from Thanksgiving to find a financial crisis affecting Arab emirate Dubai and falling European stock markets. Shares initially slumped, then recovered through the morning, before falling again before the close.
Banks fell on the back of the Dubai World financial crisis. Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs were all lower. However, some analysts believe that US banks do not have significant exposure to Dubai.
Commodity prices are falling as investors worry that the recession may not be over. Copper was one of the sharpest fallers. This hit Newmont Mining, Silvercorp Metals, Seabridge Gold and Northern Dynasty.
The Dow is currently down over 154 points at 10,310, with no shares posting gains. Nasdaq is down 37 at 2,138 while the S&P 500 is 15 points lower at 1,093. very few of these shares ended the day in positive territory.
MGM Mirage was lower because Dubai World is its partner on the largest development on the Las Vegas Strip.
