LONDON (SHARECAST) - UK supermarket Tesco has joined the slowly growing list of companies selling the Apple iPhone in the UK this Christmas.
Tesco is to sell the much sought after smartphone from Apple and has pledged to ‘bring a bit of Tesco value to the iPhone’, though it remains locked in negotiations with Apple over pricing and supply.
The US gadget maker is well known for preferring its products retail at a price commensurate with their 'premium' image.
The market leading smartphone handset is sure to be a popular item on wish lists this Christmas and cash strapped customers will have been disappointed that, thus far, the removal of O2’s exclusive contract to sell the phone has not resulted in price cuts; rival mobile phone network Orange will also have the iPhone on sale this Christmas but its tariffs are suspiciously similar to O2’s.
A spokeswoman for Tesco Mobile said it was ‘a bit of a coup’ to win the right to sell the iPhone ahead of some other major players. Mobile phone giant Vodafone has also secured the rights to sell the phone, but not until after the crucial Christmas trading period.
Tesco Mobile expects to have both the 3G and 3GS models of the phone available in around 200 of its stores by the end of the year.
