LONDON (SHARECAST) - Phytopharm has launched a treatment for arthritis in dogs, its second new canine product this year.
Zanthofen, the name of the new treatment, follows the launch of its eczema treatment in March. Phytopharm says arthritis is a serious problem for dogs as they get older, with 20% of animals over a year old affected. It claims the market in the UK alone is worth more than £10m with potential US sales over £40m.
Veterinary group Genitrix will distribute Zanthofen with sales royalties being shared after the deduction of manufacturing costs.
Phytopharm uses plant extracts to develop its drugs and currently has treatments for Alzheimer's and obesity under development.
Animal products are a useful fill-in as they are much easier to market as they do not need to go through the three-stage trial process required for human drugs.
