LONDON (SHARECAST) - With house prices falling but oil and other commodities still soaring, the decision on interest rates will be a tough one for the Bank of England after last month’s quarter point cut to 5%.
It will also be a busy day on the company news front, with several FTSE 100 companies reporting.
In retail, trading statements are due from clothes chain Next and jeweller Signet. Both companies have been less than cheery of late, with Next warning that trading conditions in the year ahead will continue to be difficult and Signet saying last month that the outlook remains ‘very challenging’ on both sides of the Atlantic. Dresdner Kleinwort foresees a 9% fall in Next’s first quarter shop sales and a 3% fall in catalogue sales.
The insurance sector also comes into focus. Royal and Sun Alliance issues first quarter results, while a trading statement is due from Old Mutual.
