US close: Stocks lifted by strong earnings LONDON (SHARECAST) - US stocks rose strongly on Tuesday with the Dow Jones Industrial Average posting its biggest gain in over a month on some robust corporate earnings and improving newsflow from the Eurozone.

"Global markets roared with optimism today as investors adopted a risk-on attitude thanks to strong US corporate results," said financial trade Shavaz Dhalla from Spreadex. According to Thomson Reuters Starmine data, over two-thirds of US companies that have reported earnings so far have either met or beaten expectations.

Dhalla said: "Thus, in the context of tightening regulations, banking scandals and countries nearing the end of their financial tether, investors can at least take comfort in the fact that many US companies are still managing to ride the current slowdown in global growth surprisingly well."

Meanwhile, news that Spain may be nearing a bailout request and a better-than-expected reading from the German ZEW economic sentiment survey helped to ease concerns about the Eurozone.

Goldman and Citi head different ways

Investment bank Goldman Sachs finished lower despite beating estimates. The Wall Street giant announced third-quarter earnings per share of $2.85, compared with a loss of 84 cents the year before and the consensus estimate of $2.28.

Shares in banking giant Citigroup ended the day higher despite the surprise resignation of Chief Executive Officer Vikram Pandit, who led the company through the $45bn government bailout in 2008. He said in a statement that he is leaving Citi as "well-positioned for continued profitability and growth, having refocused the franchise on the basics of banking".

Meanwhile, earnings from Johnson & Johnson and Mattel beat forecasts, while UnitedHealth raised its full-year outlook.

Slightly better than expected data-points

US core consumer prices rose at a 2.0% year-on-year clip in September, as expected.

Meantime, US industrial production rose by 0.4% month-on-month in September (Consensus: 0.2%).

Long-term capital inflows increased to $90b in August (Consensus: $45.3bn), after $67.2bn.

The NAHB home-builder sentiment index gained 1 point, to 41 points, in September, its highest level since June 2006.
