Catalonia seeks five billion euros from central government
Tue 28 Aug 2012
LONDON (SHARECAST) - The Generalitat of Catalonia has decided to request participation in the Spanish government's liquidity fund, saying that it will request 5.023bn euros but would not accept political conditions from the central government.
There had been speculation that Catalonia would request participation in the central government's fund because of its large outstanding public debt and the tough deficit targets that have been imposed on Spain's regions.
Catalonia is the region with the highest refinancing needs.
Valencia and Murcia are the other two regions that have already requested to partake in the liquidity fund. Many see participation in the fund as a bailout by the central government.
