LONDON (SHARECAST) - Acambis said the US Department of Defense will switch to the pharmaceutical firm’s ACAM2000 as its only smallpox vaccine.
The Department of Defense has been using Wyeth Pharmaceuticals’ Dryvax for its smallpox vaccinations. Dryvax will continue to be used until 29 February after which ACAM2000 will be the sole vaccine.
Doses of ACAM2000 are being supplied to the Department of Defense by the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through the Strategic National Stockpile.
"We are delighted to see the Department of Defense relying on ACAM2000(TM). This is in line with our ongoing discussions to secure ACAM2000(TM) production for the US for the long term and we are proceeding in line with the process to contract award that we outlined previously," said Acambis chief executive Ian Garland.
ACAM200 was developed by Acambis under a contract with the CDC to provide the government with a smallpox vaccine derived from Dryvax(R).
