LONDON (SHARECAST) - Vaccine developer Acambis has completed formulation work on the world’s first vaccine against C Difficile and expects to instigate a proof of concept trial next year.

During this year Acambis has developed several formulations of its C Difficile vaccine that show improved stability over the formulation in the Phase 1 trials. The company intends to select one of these formulations for use in clinical trials that will take place in 2008.

The proof of concept trial is scheduled for late 2008, after which data should be available for publication some 12 to 18 month later.

Further information on the road-map for development of the vaccine will be disseminated at an R&D day which the company intends to hold in the second quarter of 2008.

“'C Difficile-associated disease is a major public health problem and Acambis has the only vaccine in development,” said Dr. Michael Watson, executive vice-president of Research & Development at Acambis.

“We have previously shown that this vaccine can achieve seroconversion rates of up to 100% and, with our formulation work now completed, we are focused on getting our vaccine to proof-of-concept as quickly as possible,” Dr. Watson concluded.

The company’s C Difficile vaccine has previously undergone Phase 1 testing, using around 200 subjects. The test results showed the vaccine to be well tolerated and to generate an immune response to the two toxins that are responsible for Clostridium difficile-associated disease.
